Abstract
BACKGROUND: External stents made of degradable biomaterials are prone to be absorbed or excreted after the vascular restitution, leading no toxicity. Too rapid degradation velocity results in the poor retention of the force, affecting its role as an assist to the vascular restitution.
OBJECTIVE: To study the appearance, mass loss and compression force during in vitro degradation of the warp knitted external vascular stent made of degradable polydioxanone (PDS) fibers.
DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: A controlled study in vitro was carried out in the Biomedical Textiles Research Center and Scanning Electron Microscope Laboratory of Material Sciences & Engineering College, Donghua University from November 2007 to April 2008.
MATERIALS: External vascular stents were self-made in Donghua University Textiles College by a 0.20-mm diameter of PDS monofilament on small-diameter circular warp knitting machine.
METHODS: According to GB/T 16886.13-2001 and YY/T 0473-2004, degradation experiments in vitro were performed in culture medium containing normal saline at pH 7.4.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The appearance, mass loss and elastic recovery of the stents were observed before and after the degradation.
RESULTS: The surface corrosion of the PDS stents was evident after 8 weeks of degradation, and there were some damages on the stents at 12 weeks. The mass loss of the stents increased abruptly after 12 weeks of degradation. Compression test showed that the elastic recovery of the PDS stents remained less change within 12 weeks.
CONCLUSION: PDS fiber has a relatively long degradable period. The manufactured stents with PDS fiber has a good compression property.
